The Court House Country Club had its beginning in 1947 when a self-appointed committee of twenty Fairfax residents undertook the task of surveying the need for a private country club in the Fairfax area. When the committee became convinced that there was a demand for such a club, a site was selected which would be suitable for an eighteen-hole golf course. The name for the Club grew out of the historic Court House that housed the will of George Washington, which is located just two miles from the site.
On September 17, 1947, 121 acres were purchased immediately after incorporation of the club. On that date the committee, which became the first board of directors, began the task of converting the land, a former dairy farm, into a country club. The founding members worked together in their spare time to cut three golf holes out of the acreage. With paint and hammers, they tackled the chore of transforming the farmhouse into a Clubhouse, opting to retain two of the eight barns, sheds and silos from the original property. The cows were chased and the fields cuts, and a year later, on June 26, 1948, the Club officially opened to members. At that time, the course proudly boasted four holes with temporary mowed greens. In 1949, the course was expanded to nine holes, when the club played host to the Tri State Golf League teams in the final match of the season. A tennis court and dining facility were added at that time as well.
It wasn’t until 1954 that the second nine holes were added, providing CCF with a full 18-hole course. Even more amenities were added the following year, including a new Clubhouse, pool and tennis courts. By the end of the year, the Club boasted over 200 members.

In 1958, more land was purchased and the entire course was revised. However, golf wasn’t the only growth the Club was seeing. The addition of another court as well as a new clubhouse exclusively for tennis
In 1963, another major change occurred when the Club officially changed its name to the Country Club of Fairfax. Later in that decade, five additional holes were added to the course and five of the original holes were designated for practice play.
During the winter of 1983, the first tennis bubble was leased, providing members with the opportunity to play during the colder months.
A few years later, in 1990, the Clubhouse underwent an entire renovation, taking it from rustic charm to sophisticated elegance. The new facility opened to members on August 8, 1992. In 2005 a new pool and fitness center was constructed, and in 2010, a new Turf Maintenance & Cart Storage facility was built.
The stately brick colonial Clubhouse and the surrounding facilities may be a far cry from our humble beginnings. However, despite the external evolution our facilities have seen, the same cooperative spirit, understanding, wholehearted support and participation on which the Club was founded is still very much alive within our community.
